Polish rail operator WKD opts for IVU.realtime

IVU provides passenger information system for Warsaw–Grodzisk line

Berlin/Warsaw, 26 September 2017 – The WKD (Warszawska Kolej Dojazdowa) rail system links Warsaw with its suburbs in the southwest. As part of extensive modernisation, the company has now implemented an IVU Traffic Technologies passenger information system.

Using twenty-one modern multiple units, WKD conveys around eight million passengers annually to and from the Polish capital across a distance of 33 kilometres with 28 stop points. This makes the connection between Warsaw and Grodzisk Maziwiecki one of the most frequented railway lines in the country. In recent years, the company has invested heavily in modernising and expanding its services. To good effect: Today, the WKD is the most punctual railway operator in Poland. To further boost the attractiveness of its services WKD now informs its passengers of current departure times in real time.

The IVU.fleet control centre solution continuously processes location data from the vehicles and displays them in the graphical dispatch view. Directly connected to the control centre, IVU.realtime transmits actual data to over 100 stop displays at stations, as well as to smartphones and the internet, using the Unified Realtime API. The user interface in the IVU system is provided entirely in Polish. In addition, a bilingual text-to-speech application allows automatic loudspeaker announcements to be given in Polish and English.

IVU’s Polish partner, Comp S.A., was responsible for project management. “Day by day, the WKD ensures reliable transport in one of the most dynamic regions in Europe. The modernisation of passenger information is an important component in its further development. With the flexible IVU system, WKD is ideally equipped to expand its services in future,” says Michał Stawiński from Comp.

Martin Müller-Elschner, CEO of IVU Traffic Technologies, adds, “With this order, we have gained an important reference in a key market in Europe. The Polish market offers great opportunities that we want to tap into together with Comp. The successful project process has reaffirmed our strategy of working closely with experienced local partners and making use of their expertise.”
