28 – 30 January 2016

From 28 – 30 January, the stage of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre will welcome some of the finest vocal ensembles from York and nearby when it hosts the first York Community Choir Festival.

The Festival came about following successful Music Nights featuring vocal groups including the Tuesday Singers.

“For many choirs, performing a full hour-long concert requires a huge amount of rehearsal time and preparation, so each of our three evening concerts will feature either three or four choirs singing some of the most popular songs in their repertoire,” comments festival organiser, David Stainton.  “When we first put feelers out to the choirs of York to see if they would be interested in performing in a special choir concert, we were delighted by the number of groups who said ‘yes’ and so our Festival was born!”

In total, 11 choirs will perform over the three nights of the Festival, with the line-ups as follows:

Thursday 28 January, 7.30pm

Tutti Amici

The Vocal Vikings

The Macmillan Cancer Care Workplace Choir

The South Bank Singers

Friday 29 January, 7.30pm

In Harmony

Spirit of Harmony

Cantar

Saturday 30 January, 7.00pm

The Stamford Bridge Singers

Harmonix

Main Street Sound

York Musical Theatre Company

“We’ve got a fantastic mix of groups each with very different repertoires, from the classical South Bank Singers to the sounds of In Harmony, male and female Barbershop groups, Spirit of Harmony and Main Street Sound, young voices in youth choir Tutti Amici, and classics from stage and screen with York Musical Theatre Company,” adds Joseph Rowntree Theatre’s fundraising director, Graham Mitchell.

If successful, it is hoped that the York Community Choir Festival becomes an annual event in the Joseph Rowntree Theatre calendar.  Proceeds from all of the concerts will go to help improve facilities of York’s Art Deco theatre, which is entirely self-funding, and run completely by a dedicated army of volunteers.

Tickets cost £9 for one night, £15 for two or £18 for all three evening concerts, available online from www.jrtheatre.co.uk, emailing tickets@jrtheatre.co.uk or by calling 01904 639117.  Discounts for groups are available on request.
