New chief executive officer of Karolinska University Hospital will be Melvin Samsom, who is at present heading one of the largest medical centers in the Netherlands, Radboud University Medical Center, in the city of Nijmegen. The new hospital CEO will assume office on October 1 and performing CEO Mikael Forss will continue in the post until then.

Melvin Samsom has had a distinguished career, both as a scientist and as an administrator and is professor of gastroenterology. As recipient of a prestigious personal grant from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, he has conducted research at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia and the Mayo Clinic in the United States, as well as in the Netherlands. Samsom has been department chairman and division chairman at the University Medical Center Utrecht, then becoming CMO, and in 2011 CEO, of Radboud University Medical Center.

- Taking over the leadership of one of the most important medical centers in the western world is of course a wonderful opportunity, says Melvin Samsom. We will need to develop new strategies for the care of the patients of the future, and Karolinska University Hospital should be among the foremost in that undertaking.

Radboudumc has in excess of 10 000 employees. During Melvin Samsom´s tenure as CMO and CEO, it has undergone an extensive process of  change and reconstruction, for improved quality of care, research and education. Special emphasis has been put on innovative thinking, not only in medical research, but equally in healthcare delivery. Care quality, patient safety and patient participation have been key points of the change process in care delivery, while the bachelor curriculum at the medical school has been redesigned and medical research has been restructured for increased focus, with the number of research themes decreased.

- We are very pleased with the recruitment of an international top talent as CEO, says Per Båtelson, chairman of the board of Karolinska University Hospital. Melvin Samsom has an outstanding ability to manage change processes in the interest of patients and he is clearly the right person to continue and expand the Karolinska strategy of constant improvement.

Karolinska Institutet, KI, also greets the appointment of Melvin Samson with great satisfaction. Karolinska University Hospital is our most important partner, both in clinical research and medical education, says Anders Hamsten, vice-chancellor of KI. I am looking forward to strengthen our collaboration, together with Melvin Samsom.
