Keliber ("Company") is evaluating the location of lithium chemical plant ("chemical plant") in the Kaustinen Kalavesi or alternatively in the Kokkola Industrial Park ("KIP"). As part of the evaluation, the company has prepared an environmental impact assessment program ("EIA Program") for locating the chemical plant in the KIP area and submitted the program to the authorities of South Ostrobothnian Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment ("ELY Center").

In the environmental impact assessment, the different implementation alternatives for the chemical plant and the impacts of the alternatives are assessed. During the EIA process, the current state of the environment, as well as potential impacts of the future production for the natural environment, soil, bedrock, surface and the ground waters, vegetation and animals will be examined. Also, the impacts on the landscape, land use and on the society in the area will be assessed.

"We haven’t yet decided on the location of our future chemical plant. We initiated the EIA process for the chemical plant in the KIP area before making the decision on location, because the environmental impacts of the operations play an important role in the evaluation of the location of the chemical plant. In addition, we want to ensure that we can keep the planned timetable, in both location alternatives i.e. in Kaustinen Kalavesi or in Kokkola KIP. EIA process for the chemical plant is important for us and we hope that people in the region will actively participate in the discussion and give feedback on our plans, "says Pertti Lamberg, CEO of Keliber Oy.

"We have already initiated the assessment of the current state of the environment as well as the impacts of our operations. Our target is to get the impact assessments and EIA report completed in the spring 2018" says Kari Wiikinkoski, Environmental Manager of Keliber Oy.

All those whom the planned operations may affect in the future can participate in the EIA process. The EIA program is available in Finnish on the company's website at: www.keliber.fi/en/environment/eia/eia-for-the-lithium-chemical-plant/ and on the Environmental Administration website at: www.ymparisto.fi/fi-FI/Asiointi_luvat_ja_ymparistovaikutusten_arviointi/Ymparistovaikutusten_arviointi/YVAhankkeet/Kokkolan_litiumkemiantehdas_Kokkola

A public meeting on the environmental impact assessment program will be held on Tuesday January 16, 2018 at 05.30 - 08.00 p.m. in Kokkola, at the premises of the Ykspihlaja toimitalo at Satamakatu 40.
