An exclusive solo exhibition for Kirkby Gallery by one of the UK's most prominent contemporary sculptors.

At Kirkby Gallery until 19 April 2014

Artist Talk event on Thursday, 20 March 2014

Knowsley Council is delighted to present this solo exhibition of work by Halima Cassell, as the inaugural exhibition in the new Kirkby Centre.

This is the first time all aspects of the artist’s sculptural works and vessels have been on public display together; exploring her development and practice as an international artist, whilst based in the North West.

The exhibition charts her use of design, process and experimentation as an artist over the past 20 years.

Central to this exhibition are a series of specially commissioned works in concrete, celebrating the New Town history of Kirkby and a new aspect of Halima's portfolio. The inspiration behind the carved concrete works have been inspired by Kirkby’s architecture and geometry, as seen through photographs from the 60’s and 70’s, maps and research undertaken. Translating line, forms and space into a contemporary visual language also echoes geometric characteristics as present in the work of William George Mitchell, whose work was also an influence to Halima (re: artwork overlooking Kirkby Library).

Born in 1975 in Pakistan, brought up in Manchester and now living in Blackburn, Lancashire, Halima's varied, multi-cultural background is tangibly present in her work. Fusing her Asian roots with a fascination for African pattern work and a passion for architectural geometry, Halima's work is intense yet playful, structured yet creative; substantial yet dynamic and invariably compelling in its originality.

To find out more about Halima as an artist, come along to her Artist Talk in the Gallery on Thursday 20 March, 1pm where she will be discussing her work.
