Crystal Magic at Ambiente!

Kosta Boda kicks off the 2018 Ambiente Fair with the introduction of the exciting collaborations – Crystal Magic, an elegant drinking glass series by the pioneering Åsa Jungnelius.

Last year, Kosta Boda celebrated its 275th anniversary with a regal event in Kosta on 6 June with HRH the King and HRH Queen Sylvia, as well as the widely acclaimed tribute exhibition Hommage, for which Åsa were invited to contribute their own innovations. The design objects created especially for Hommage have infused Kosta Boda with new energy, inspiration and fire, but above all they’ve re-established the glassworks as one of the world’s boldest, with superior craftsmanship and a ground-breaking design idiom.

“Taking over as marketing manager during the rebirth of Kosta Boda in 2017 was electrifying – being here to top off the successes of last year by presenting the new design collaborations we’ve had with Åsa Jungnelius is truly an honour,” says Kjell-Olof Askencrantz, Marketing Director at Kosta Boda.

Crystal Magic. “Pink is the only colour there is”.

Åsa Jungnelius’s artistic expression is often material-related and ranges from interiors to monumental formats where she uses the language of the materials to investigate the relationship between our bodies, the objects we surround ourselves with and the spaces in which they jointly act. The constant positioning of the material in the intersection of economy, ecology and the socio-political describes the philosophical basis of the era we live in.

The objects become a sort of fetish of ourselves as individuals and the time we live in. Now, after two years of product development, Åsa is finally able to launch her series Crystal Magic. Working closely with a specialist workshop for drinking glasses, Åsa has designed a series of ornately decorated glasses made of finest crystal produced from quartz sand, which creates the dancing rainbows and the intentionally elongated design that allows the glasses to be used for many purposes to brighten everyday life.

“I wanted to create functional everyday objects of the highest possible quality that could be used for many years to come. Originally, the idea was that Crystal Magic would feature all the colours of the rainbow, like those created by the refraction of light through crystal – but really, pink is the only colour there is. It was important to me that the glasses were made at Kosta Boda – not only because of their great skills in glass working, but also because the glasses are made by people with good working conditions. Kosta Boda is the only place for me!” says Åsa Jungnelius.

Åsa Jungnelius is an artist and instructor at the University of Arts, Crafts and Design, based both in Stockholm and in Månsamåla in the province of Småland. She’s been linked to Kosta Boda since 2007. Currently she is also developing a public work of art, Snäckan – a tribute to motherhood that embraces an entire future station in the Stockholm Metro. Jungnelius is the artistic director of the artist-driven project Residence-In-Nature and has many works featured in private and public collections throughout Sweden. She has received many awards and stipends at a number of art institutions. In collaboration with the LAST Studio, she designed parts of the tailor-made interior of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. The Crystal Magic series of glasses consists of a “beer glass” for red and white wines, a coupe that is perfect for effervescent wines or as a dessert glass and an eye-catching tumbler in a combination of colourless and faintly pink glass. The series is hand-made, mouth-blown and made of lead-free glass, which is multifunctional and machine washable. Price per piece: Tumbler €€39 / Coupe €€44 / Wine glass €€44.
