Tens of millions of people all over the world suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. The discoveries behind the Crafoord Prize in Polyarthritis 2013 have in a decisive manner contributed to our understanding of the disease. For instance, Lars Klareskogs's research shows that if no-one in Sweden smoked, one in five cases could probably be avoided.

The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation has decided in collaboration with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to support Swedish research in mathematics. The aim is for Sweden to recover its position at the international cutting edge by giving the best young researchers international experience and by recruiting young as well as more experienced mathematicians to Sweden.

On Thursday morning on 17 January, at 08:00 am (Swedish time, CET +1) the Crafoord Prize for 2013 will be announced. This year’s discipline is Polyarthritis (diseases that causes inflammation in several joints, e.g. rheumatoid arthritis).
