High Tech Pet Care Device Connects Animals with Owners

Italian made Romeow allows owners to care for pets via smartphone app, and its creators are seeking funds to launch its product.

MILAN, ITALY—Pets bring joy to their owner’s lives, and, in return, owners pledge a commitment to caring for their animal companions. When life separates a beloved pet from its human counterpart, thoughtful owners can be prepared with the new Romeow, an Italian-made system that remotely manages and monitors the feeding and watering of pets. Purple Network, the creators of Romeow, have launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise €80,000 by December 29 to help launch the new product.

The result of a thorough technical analysis, the Romeow’s design was born out of careful research and love of pets. The unit consists of dispensers for food and water remotely controlled with an intuitive application accessed with a smartphone or tablet. This application lets owners decide when bowls need refilling, while the integrated webcam can see at any moment whether or not the bowls are empty. Owners can also record a signal or message to let their hungry pet know dinner is ready.

The desire to create a product to improve the lives of pets and the people who care for them came from personal experience for Alessandro Affronto, founder and CEO of Purple Network. As a cat owner, Affronto recognized a common need among pet owners who lead frantic lives filled with commitments.

"I am often forced to be away from my cat for several days due to work commitments,” said Affronto. “Rather than put my cat Barsik in a boarding house or leave him home alone, I can now allow Barsik to stay home alone, confident that I am controlling his meals and am able to monitor and communicate with him at any time.” Romeow also works as an emergency solution for those unexpected times away from home. “If a meeting keeps me in the office for longer than I planned, I simply open the app on my smartphone and refill Barsik’s food and water with the touch of a button,” said Affronto. “When I return home, he is already fed and ready to play.”

The sleekly designed Romeow was presented as a prototype in Italy at Maker Faire, a great exhibition dedicated to innovation and creativity. Production of Romeow will begin in 2015 but is very much dependent upon the support of its crowdfunding campaign. Supporters of the campaign will receive several perks, including special low pricing on the first Romeows created. Those contributing €10 through €50 will receive Romeow brand merchandise. The first 50 supporters to contribute €199 will receive special early bird pricing on one Romeow pet feeder while the next 100 supporters will receive a Romeow pet feeder for €249 and the following 150 supporters will receive one for €299. After the first 300 Romeow units are sold, campaign supporters will still enjoy a discounted product for €330. Supporters contributing €2,490 will receive 10 Romeow units, and supporters contributing €5,000 will have a chance to meet the team with round trip airfare and accommodations to Milan.
