Lumens.com has introduced IN-EI by Issey Miyake for Artemide, a new, innovative lighting collection created to showcase the harmony between light and shadow.
Issey Miyake’s signature in haute couture—specialized garment pleating—translates to this contemporary lighting collection and collaboration with Artemide. IN-EI is comprised of nine table, free-standing and suspension lamps designed and folded to play on the interaction and mathematics between light and dark. IN-EI stands for shadow, shadiness, nuance in Japanese.
Miyake kept nature in mind when labeling the fixtures, as each bears a name referencing animal life in English: the Mendori Table Lamp (the hen); the Mogura Table Lamp and Mogura Mini Table Lamp (the mole); the Minomushi Suspension and Floor Lamp (the bagworm); the Tatsuno Ogoshigo Suspension (the dragon); the Hakofugu Suspension (the boxfish); the Katatsumuri Suspension (the snail); and the Fukurou Suspension (the owl).
The folds found in IN-EI by Issey Miyake were created with extraordinary precision. The lamps are designed using 2D or 3D mathematical principals, to harmoniously alternate between light and shade. The unique folding technology creates beautiful layers of light and dark, along with statuesque forms that are striking even when unlit.
In addition to this unique development, IN-EI by Issey Miyake was built to be very sustainable. Working with Reality Lab, Miyake developed a fabric from recycled PET bottles that has a transparency better than paper and reduces both energy consumption and CO2 emissions up to 40% (compared to the production of new materials). Each lamp is also fitted with an energy-efficient LED.
Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake is known worldwide for his work in women’s clothing, watches, perfume and more. As seen in IN-EI, his creative process has centered on the concept of “one piece of cloth” for more than 20 years, gaining him notoriety in the fashion world.
