Italian leader in high performance automotive transmissions presents range of technology in Berlin

Rivoli (Torino, Italy) 5th December 2014 – Oerlikon Drive Systems Segment’s transmission specialist brand, Oerlikon Graziano, will present its range of hybrid and electric transmission systems at the 2014 CTI Symposium and Transmission Expo which takes place in Berlin, Germany, from 8th-11th December.

Oerlikon Graziano’s OGeco torque infill hybrid transmission will be one of the main attractions at the 2014 CTI exhibition. Displayed at the company’s booth alongside the 2SED and 4SED seamless-shift transaxles for electric vehicles and a new 2 Speed automated manual full electric transmission, the OGeco transmission has been developed as an alternative to the hybridisation of conventional DCTs; Oerlikon Graziano believes it delivers an efficient, lightweight, compact and cost-effective solution to enable passenger car hybridisation.

Integrating a 6-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) with a 120KW electric motor through a 2-speed epicyclic transmission, OGeco provides torque infill, electric boost, regeneration, electric drive and engine cranking. A prototype unit has been installed in a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG by Oerlikon Graziano and its UK partner, Vocis, and the packaging is so effective that the OGeco with integrated electric motor fits into the same space as the 7-speed DCT normally fitted to the car. The demonstration vehicle has been well received by OEM customers and Oerlikon expects significant interest from CTI visitors.

“For high performance car applications, the quality and speed of the gear shift are both priorities,” says Claudio Torrelli, Head of Product Development at Oerlikon Graziano. “With OGeco, this was achieved by a combination of torque infill from the electric motor and a gear change actuation system that integrates each shift valve into its corresponding shift rod. The smooth shifts we achieve at low-to-medium vehicle performance levels match current DCT expectations, without compromising the rapid shift time and responsiveness required during spirited driving.” Currently suitable for front-engined and mid-engined cars with either four wheel drive or rear wheel drive, the OGeco concept is sufficiently flexible to be adapted to transverse transaxles in the future too.

Oerlikon Graziano will also be showcasing three electric transmission systems, developed by the company in response to the increasing demands for more efficient energy use and emissions reduction.

The 2SED is a dual-speed seamless-shifting transaxle that can be coupled with a transverse electric motor, for front or rear full electric axle application. The 4SED is a 4-speed, lightweight transmission that boasts increased efficiency and seamlessly smooth shifting. Its compact, scalable design makes it suitable for a wide range of vehicle types, including electric passenger or commercial vehicles or high-performance, four wheel drive hybrids.

A new, 2 Speed Automated Manual Transmission completes the range of advanced transmission technologies displayed at the Oerlikon Graziano booth. Called AVTR (Adaptable Voltage & Transmission Ratio), this full electric transmission was developed as part of an EU-funded research project (“FP7”). Used singularly it offers EVs the advantages of multispeed transmissions and if applied to two independent axles it makes the vehicle AWD while at the same time allowing seamless shifting.

“We are showcasing our latest advanced transmission concepts for hybrid and electric vehicles at the 2014 CTI exhibition and expect significant interest from visitors,” says Paolo Mantelli, Oerlikon Graziano Head of Performance Automotive. “The OGeco transmission provides an efficient, compact and cost-effective method of passenger car hybridisation and our 2SED, 4SED and AVTR technologies are at the forefront of delivering flexible, drive system solutions in the HEV marketplace.”
