U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Deploy Defencell® Flood Walls to Protect Downtown Smithland
State and local officials rush to construct Defencell flood barriers along Smithland Lock and Dam to reduce dam runoff.
(SMITHLAND, Ky.) May 10, 2011 — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District deployed more than two miles of Defencell® Flood Walls to prevent Ohio River floodwaters from reaching downtown Smithland. Defencell systems were selected as part of a statewide effort to minimize flood damage caused by heavy rains across the Mississippi River Valley.
“If it wasn’t for Defencell flood barriers, two-thirds of Smithland – including the County Seat – would be under water right now,” said Brent Stringer, Livingston County Emergency Management Officer for Livingston County, Kentucky on Tuesday. “Not only has the product exceeded our expectations, but also the expectations of the Army Corps. of Engineers.”
Defencell Flood Walls are lightweight, stackable water containment barriers designed to help first responders construct flood protection much faster than traditional sandbags. Fiberweb, Inc., shipped 48 Defencell pallets - with each pallet containing 44 units equivalent to more than 15,000 sandbags - from Old Hickory, Tenn. to Smithland, Ky. in less than 24 hours.
The decision to deploy Defencell barriers comes after recent flood testing conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Test results determined that Defencell flood walls significantly outperform sandbags in the areas of installation and removal time, water seepage and overall system endurance.
