Las Arenas bullring in Barcelona refurbished using Finnforest solutions

Las Arenas in Barcelona received a timber-domed roof when the disused
historical bullring was renovated into a multi-purpose hall. The roof structure
is constructed of Finnforest Kerto panels and glulam beams.
The dome structure covers a roof area of 5,100 m2 and has a diameter of nearly
80 m. "The local planning regulations determined the height of the roof, and
the dome is quite flat in shape as a result," architect James Leathemb from
Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners Architects explains. "Therefore the structural
systems have to work much harder because of the large circumference."

The gridshell structure of the roof is based on glulam beams connected using
steel plates and dowels at the junctions. There is a steel ring beam at the
crown. Kerto-Q panels on top of the glulam beams function as part of the
structure. This structure achieves 60-minute fire resistance according to the
Eurocode.
