Susie and Amanda’s Story

Susie Matthias currently resides in London, Ontario where she was born. Susie was born without arms or legs as a result of the drug Thalidomide. Interestingly 2012 is also the 50th anniversary from when the drug was banned in Canada. Susie has been painting since childhood and joined the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA) in the early nineties. Her artwork has been featured across Canada and she even won a national competition that had one of her paintings featured on a special Christmas stamp issued by Canada Post.  When she isn’t busy painting, Susie enjoys activities like swimming

Penny Oman was born and raised in Sexsmith, a small town in northern Alberta. At the age of fourteen, when she was an active, easy-going teenager, she was involved in an accident that left her paralyzed from the neck down.After spending a year in the University Hospital in Edmonton, Penny spent the next three years at the Glenrose School Hospital. It was during this time that she attended a lecture tour by the late mouth painter Myron Angus, an MFPA artist. Michel Guillemette

Averill Barkhouse

Born in 1951, in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Averill started his life's journey ‘like any other boy growing up in the country', attending the local school in Upper Rawdon and helping in his father's general store. Amanda Orichesfsky

Amanda Orichefsky, born on June 26, 1989, started her life with a severe disability, which she learned to overcome at a very early age. Amanda was diagnosed with Arthrogryposis at birth. Her feet were up near her face when she was born and she started surgeries at three weeks of age to lower her legs and feet down to a normal level. The loving care Amanda received in her home made it possible for her to attend school and she graduated from Sunnyview Public School and Don Mills High School.
