Mitsubishi Electric has launched a new Ecodan® cylinder designed specifically to work in hybrid situations where the ideal low carbon solution is an air source heat pump working in tandem with gas, oil or other heating technology.

The EHPT20X-VM2HB packaged cylinder and FTC-4, fourth generation controller, enables the seamless switching of bivalent heating between the Ecodan monobloc heat pump and alternative systems. The unit calculates which technology to run at any one time to ensure that the property achieves the most cost-efficient and low carbon heating all year round.

“This hybrid functionality not only brings the renewable benefits of Ecodan to medium-sized new-build homes, it also means low carbon heating can now become a reality for larger domestic properties and light commercial situations,” explains John Kellett, General Manager of the company's heating systems division.

The new cylinder and controller increases the flexibility of both design and performance and enables the operating parameters to be decided and saved before installers get to the site.  This not only cuts down on installation time but will also be particularly useful for large projects involving multiple properties, such as blocks of flats.

The cylinder's sleek, modern design is pre-plumbed and wired for faster installation and is compatible with Mitsubishi Electric wireless room controllers.  The unit, which includes integrated hydraulic components and advanced self-learning controls, provides improved performance with a simple to use graphic interface and fast on-site commissioning via a pre-programmed SD card.

Its control system also offers a cascade facility which allows up to six Ecodan monobloc outdoor units to be linked and controlled together, enabling the system to deliver between 5kW and 84kW – making it ideal for multi-use premises. The intelligent controls rotate operation amongst the individual units, allowing the system to decide the operating capacity requirements based on a building’s heating load.

The unit offers intelligent, self-learning room temperature control and two-zone space heating control as standard, along with advanced weather compensation to deliver efficient, comfortable heating, regardless of the season.

“Every development we make with Ecodan is designed to help increase the range and types of buildings that can benefit from renewable heating,” adds Kellett.  “This new cylinder and controller make Ecodan ideal for blocks of flats, light commercial situations and properties that have a working oil or gas heating system but still need to meet renewable energy targets.”
