The Montgomery College Foundation has secured an $8,000 gift from Sandy Spring Bank, bringing the bank’s total scholarship support $72,000 since 2010. This latest commitment will help students in the College’s new initiative, Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success (ACES), which was launched last fall. Students enrolled in the ACES program and entering Montgomery College in fall 2014 will be eligible for the Sandy Spring Bank Scholarship.

The ACES program is a collaboration between Montgomery College, Montgomery County Public Schools and the Universities at Shady Grove to develop a seamless pathway from high school to community college to a university, which will increase the number of students earning college degrees. ACES will provide supportive coaching and individualized services for high school students to ensure successful transition, enrollment, and college completion. ACES will focus on underrepresented students in higher education, including African American, Hispanic and low-income students, as well as those who would be the first in their family to attend college.

The program began in 10 MCPS high schools during the start of the 2013-2014 academic year and is currently serving990students. The first ACES cohort will begin at Montgomery College during the fall 2014 semester.

“Sandy Spring Bank has joined a special group of generous individual, foundation, and corporate donors who are supporting ACES students as they enter Montgomery College and begin their journey to complete a four-year degree,” said Dr. DeRionne Pollard, Montgomery College president. “Thanks to donors like Sandy Spring Bank, students who are at risk for not entering or completing college will now have the support of their community in achieving their educational dreams. We are grateful for Sandy Spring Bank’s continued support and investment in Montgomery College students.”

“The new ACES program will have an important impact on the students, their families and our community, and we applaud Montgomery College, Montgomery County Public Schools and the Universities at Shady Grove for their vision,” said Daniel J. Schrider, president and chief executive officer of Sandy Spring Bank. “As the oldest bank headquartered in Maryland, Sandy Spring Bank is proud to provide scholarships to ACES students to ensure that financial need is not a barrier to attending and completing college.”
