Construction has started on the new €40 million Hospital Logistic Centre in Belfort, France. Mott MacDonald is monitoring design and construction on behalf of Vinci Construction France. The consultancy previously acted as lenders’ technical advisor on the project, providing technical, operational, maintenance, cost and contractual advice.

The 14,000 sq m facility will accommodate laundry, kitchen, warehouse and pharmacy services, as well as maintenance technical rooms and administrative offices for a new 800-bed hospital being built adjacently. It will also provide these services for five surrounding hospitals and medical centres, supporting over 1,500 beds in the region.

Mott MacDonald’s project director Erwann Pilé said: “One of the most interesting aspects of this project is the use of automated guided vehicles which will transit drug treatments, meals and laundry through an underground gallery from the logistic areas to the new hospital. The use of such automatic robots is currently being used in health and industrial facilities.”

The Hospital Logistic Centre is due to be completed early 2015. The procurement scheme is a public-private partnership contract covering 25 years of operation after the project handover.
