Unique study reveals genetic spelling mistakes that increase the risk of common ...

More than 80 genetic ’spelling mistakes’ that can increase the risk of breast, prostate and ovarian cancer have been found in a large, international research study within the framework of the EU network COGS. For the first time, the researchers also have a relatively clear picture of the total number of genetic alterations that can be linked to these cancers. Ultimately the researchers hope to be able to calculate...

Epigenetic changes can explain rheumatism

A new study by researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the US shows that so-called epigenetic changes in the DNA are involved in causing rheumatoid arthritis, and that these changes can be genetically predetermined. The paper, which is published in the scientific periodical Nature Biotechnology, sheds light on how risk genes can be expressed in disease and...

Learning the alphabet of gene control

Scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have made a large step towards the understanding of how human genes are regulated. In a new study, published in the journal Cell, they identified the DNA sequences that bind to over four hundred proteins that control expression of genes. This knowledge is required to understand how differences in genomes of individuals affect their risk to develop disease.

Gene switch important in cancer discovered

Scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and the University of Helsinki in Finland have shown that the 'switches' that regulate the expression of genes play a major role in the development of cancer. In a study, published in Science, they have investigated a gene region that contains a particular single nucleotide variant associated with increased risk for developing colorectal and prostate cancers – and found...

Diabetes conference to look at lifestyle-cell interaction

It is not just our own lifestyle that influences the risk of diabetes, but also the behaviour of our parents. A conference at Karolinska Institutet addresses both heredity and environment and the effects they have at cell level in this complex disease.
Reporters are welcome to attend the symposium and interview the scientists.
Conference: Symposium on Molecular and Physiological Aspects of Diabetes...

New method enables ‘smarter’ analysis of individual cells

Only by viewing a Georges Seurat painting at close range can you appreciate the hidden complexities of pointillism – small, distinct dots of color applied to form an image from a distance. Similarly, biologists and geneticists have long sought to analyze profiles of genes at the single cell level but technology limitations have only allowed a view from afar. However, research published in Nature Biotechnology now...
