The 2011 Financial Management of the Nobel Foundation

On Friday, April 27, 2012, the Trustees of the Nobel Foundation approved the 2011 financial statements of the Foundation.

OnDecember 31, 2011, the market value of the Nobel Foundation’s invested capital amounted to SEK 2,973 m (3,151). Total return on equity (growth in Foundation assets after adding back the overall sum for all Nobel Prizes and operating expenses) amounted to -2.6 (5.5) per cent.

Net assets, that is, the market value of the Foundation’s equity calculated as invested capital at market value adjusted for other balance sheet items, changed by -6.5 (1.7) per cent.

The Nobel Foundation’s assets are allocated among equities, fixed income investments and alternative assets. Alternative assets, in turn, are allocated among properties, hedge funds as well as private equity and unlisted bonds. Of total portfolio capital at year-end, 47 (54) per cent consisted of equities, 20 (22) per cent fixed income investments and 33 (24) per cent alternative assets.

The return on the Nobel Foundation’s total equities portfolio was -9.3 (8.7) per cent, while the return on the Foundation’s fixed income investments was 3.3 (2.0) per cent. During the year, the value of the Foundation’s property fund holdings rose by 3.4 (8.0) per cent in local currencies, and the value of the hedge fund portfolio rose by 3.0 (5.4) per cent.

During 2011, the Foundation’s book profit amounted to SEK -19.2 m (68.0).

With reference to the results during recent years, and the assessment that the Board of Directors makes today of the potential for achieving a good inflation-adjusted return on the Nobel Foundation’s capital during the next several years, the level of the 2012 prize amount was discussed. The Board of Directors of the Nobel Foundation will deliver its decision regarding the prize amount at an upcoming meeting.

New Chairman of the Trustees of the Nobel Foundation
Former Justice of the Supreme Court Torgny Håstad was elected the new Chairman of the Trustees of the Nobel Foundation, succeeding Professor Barbara Cannon.

Professor Staffan Normark was re-elected as a board member and Professor Astrid Gräslund as a deputy member of the Board of Directors of the Nobel Foundation. The Board of Directors is presented below.
