Nobina has been awarded a contract extension by Skånetrafiken to continue operating its public transport in the city of Malmö. The extension option will enable an investment in electric buses in Malmö. The Malmö Central and MalmöExpressen contracts are being extended by two years, until 2021, and include a total of 83 scheduled buses. Of these, Nobina will acquire 13 new electric buses.

Starting in December 2018, the entire Route 7 will transfer to electric power, which will signal another step towards the City of Malmö’s goal to introduce electric-powered public transport. The buses will be charged using green electricity and contribute to improve air quality and also provide quieter public transport. The issue of noise has become increasingly important as cities become denser and new housing is built.

“It feels extremely gratifying to continue contributing to improved accessibility and sustainability in Malmö by providing a comprehensive solution for the electric operation of Route 7. We are also proud that we as an operator are one of the first in Sweden to establish electric operations on a broader scale. We can now take our experiences from earlier tests and pilot projects and put these to good use,” says Per Karlsson, traffic manager at Nobina in Malmö.

“This is a first step towards a quiet, sustainable and attractive public transport in the city. We hope the initiative will result in more passengers and Malmö residents who are more satisfied, and can enjoy a quieter urban environment,” says Linus Eriksson, traffic director at Skånetrafiken.

“For our passengers, the new green buses will offer a high level of travel and commuter comfort with an interior adapted to our new design for varying needs. It will be possible to connect to the internet and the buses will be equipped with infotainment solutions for better information. For both passengers and for local residents, the electric buses produce essentially a noise-free environment,” says Jan-Åke Bergmark, business area manager at Skånetrafiken.
