Keliber participates in international project for lithium-ion battery recycling

Report this content

Nordic Mining’s associated company Keliber Oy participates together with Norwegian and international partners in a project aiming to develop and commercialise a new lithium-ion battery recycling process.

Keliber is one of the industrial partners in a project aiming to develop and commercialise a new lithium-ion battery recycling process that is suitable for the expected larger future battery volumes, and with a higher material recovery rate than today's technologies. Other industrial partners in the project are Norsk Hydro ASA (project leader), Glencore Nikkelverk AS and AS Batteriretur. The R&D partners in the project are Elkem AS Technology, IME RWTH Aachen (Germany), MIMI Tech (Germany), Agder University and NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology). The project has been granted financial support from the Research Council of Norway.

The increasing use of lithium-ion batteries in mobile electronics, electric vehicles and energy storage solutions makes recycling of materials commercially attractive and environmentally important. Lithium-ion batteries contain valuable materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, aluminium, graphite and special fluoride salts.

CEO Ivar S. Fossum comments: “Going forward, mineral recycling will become increasingly important. Keliber’s engagement in lithium-ion battery recycling confirms a strong commitment to sustainability.”
