Reported on Complex Measures Related to Patient Safety and Anesthesia Care

North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA), the largest single-specialty anesthesia and perioperative management company in the United States, is proud to announce the organization was recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for meeting the 2014 Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) requirements. With more than 100 reporting categories to choose from, NAPA selected complex measures within the patient safety category that are relevant to the care provided before, during and after anesthesia: perioperative temperature management, timing of prophylactic antibiotic and prevention of catheter-related bloodstream infections: central venous catheter insertion protocol. In addition to internal staff dedicated to the reporting process, NAPA also engaged outside consultants to assure its quality data met and exceeded standards.

“At NAPA, quality data collection and ensuring patient care and safety are an organizational priority,” said John Di Capua, CEO of NAPA. “Our recognition from CMS underscores NAPA’s continued commitment to patient safety, outcomes and delivering optimal efficiencies to our patients and clinical partners.”

Currently, NAPA offers various evidence-based quality improvement (QI) tools that help enhance the quality of care through its organization-wide QI program. To further enhance its reporting capabilities, the organization is working with the Anesthesia Business Group, a consortium of anesthesia providers of which NAPA is a founding member, to develop the Qualified Clinical Data Registry (QCDR). The QCDR creates the infrastructure to collect data, the ability to analyze the data and the mechanics to provide same to CMS.

PQRS is a program that encourages eligible professionals (EPs) and group practices across the United States to report information related to quality of care. The program provides participants with an opportunity to assess and report out on the quality of care they provide to their patients, helping to ensure optimal care and efficiencies. In 2014, CMS applied a 2% negative payment adjustment to individual EP’s and group practices that did not meet the required 50% reporting rate metric. CMS also applied incentive payments to those who succeeded in meeting those metrics.
