North American Partners in Anesthesia’s Julie Marhalik-Helms Named to Becker’s 50 Experts Leading the Field of Patient Safety List

North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA) announced today that its Senior Director of Quality Improvement, Julie Marhalik-Helms, RN, BSN has been named by Becker’s Healthcare to the 2016 edition of its list of “50 Experts Leading the Field of Patient Safety...This recognition has resulted from Ms. Marhalik-Helms’ commitment to patient safety through her body of work, personal accomplishments and organizational leadership.

It is an honor to be recognized for a service that I feel so passionate about,” said Ms. Marhalik-Helms. “Patient safety should always be in the foremost thoughts of every clinician.  Through my evidence-based initiatives, I look forward to building safer systems, processes and programs to enhance the care and safety provided to our patients.”

Ms. Marhalik-Helms has spent the majority of her professional career creating and implementing initiatives that reflect her longstanding commitment to patient safety and quality improvement. In her role as NAPA’s Senior Director of Quality Improvement, she is responsible for the strategic oversight of the organization’s patient safety and quality program at the 200+ clinical sites where anesthesia and managed care services are provided. This translates into gathering critical patient safety data on over one million patient interactions each year. In addition, Ms. Marhalik-Helms is heavily involved in NAPA’s customer service program, NAPA Service Experience, where she adds significant value in further enhancing the patient experience.

The 2016 edition of Becker’s "50 Experts Leading the Field of Patient Safety" list features clinicians, advocates and legislators who work tirelessly to eliminate medical errors and improve safety in the industry. Becker's Healthcare has published a version of this list annually since 2013. Experts were selected for this year's list based on editorial research and discretion. Nominations were also considered when making selections for this list.

About Julie Marhalik-Helms, RN, BSN
Julie Marhalik-Helms received her degree in nursing from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. She began her career at Bons Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia where she held successively responsible positions in pediatrics, surgical services and endoscopy. She then worked for a privately owned endoscopy center as the Nurse Manager and Clinical Coordinator where she led the organization through multiple successful AAAHC accreditation surveys and obtained the first AAAHC Medicare- deemed status in the state of Virginia in a private setting in 1996. Ms. Marhalik-Helms’ passion to meaningfully impact patient safety in the healthcare setting led her to found a consulting company which led multiple endoscopy and surgery centers in the Virginia market through the AAAHC/AAAASF accreditation process. Her company also maintained long-term management agreements with many centers for federal/state/accreditation compliance. Additionally, Ms. Marhalik-Helms has worked diligently in developing and implementing individualized programs pertaining to Quality Improvement, Infection Control, Patient Safety and Risk Management.
