North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA) announced today that one of its leading anesthesiologists, Linda Shore-Lesserson, M.D., F.A.S.E., will be a featured speaker at the New York State Society of Anesthesiologist’s (NYSSA) 67th Annual PostGraduate Assembly in Anesthesiology (PGA/67) to be held December 13-17, 2013 in New York, NY. NAPA will also support the event as an exhibitor at booths #232 and 233.

Dr. Shore-Lesserson, Director of Cardiovascular Anesthesiology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY, and Professor of Anesthesiology at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine in Hempstead, NY, will be moderating a session entitled "Patient Blood Management: New Approaches to Old Problems". This session features internationally known experts who will discuss optimal blood management strategies for the avoidance of adverse outcomes related to transfusion therapy. During this session, the importance of strategies aimed at improving patient outcome by minimizing transfusions will be addressed. In a different session, Dr. Shore-Lesserson will present on the topic “Blood Conservation- Update on Current Practice”. During this presentation, she will be speaking on the development of a Comprehensive Blood Management Program. Her presentation will provide insights into the avoidance of anemia and the focus on optimal hemostatic strategies to avoiding blood transfusion in the perioperative period.

“Patient Blood Management is a patient-centered approach to blood management that seeks to focus on the entire patient physiology in order to minimize exposure to allogeneic blood products,” said Dr. Shore-Lesserson. “It is well-known that both anemia and blood transfusions confer an increased risk for adverse outcomes in the surgical patient. It is critical that Patient Blood Management be undertaken by an entire multidisciplinary team of practitioners ranging from the primary medical team to the peri-surgical team, and must include hospital administration leadership for its support.”

For over sixty-six years, the PostGraduate Assembly (PGA) – the annual meeting of The New York State Society of Anesthesiologists – has been a focal point for innovation and change in the medical specialty of anesthesiology. The PGA is currently one of the largest annual gatherings for anesthesiologists worldwide.
