NAPA’s Richard Siegenfeld, MD Authors One-of-a-Kind Reference Book Specifically for Women

Melville, NY – April 15, 2013 – North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA) anesthesiologist, Richard Siegenfeld, M.D., recently published his first book, “The Epidural Book: A Woman’s Guide to Anesthesia for Childbirth.” With the vast majority of the 4 million births that occur in the U.S. every year resulting in an epidural or spinal block for labor and delivery, many women have concerns about these procedures and want and need answers.

“I have too often seen the anxiety and uncertainty that results when an expectant mother does not have sufficient information in advance of the epidural that will likely be administered during her delivery,” said Dr. Siegenfeld.   “I wanted women to have a book of their own that transformed a complex medical concept into something understandable and enjoyable.”

“The Epidural Book” is an easy-to-read guide written to help an expectant mother prepare for her all-important day. The book addresses these concerns and provides knowledge on anesthesia options during labor and delivery as well as for a Caesarean section (C-section). In his book, Dr. Siegenfeld explores topics such as how the epidural works; how the procedure is administered; possible side effects, and also addresses common questions, including:

  • Who administers epidurals and spinal blocks and when?
  • How does anesthesia affect both the mother and the baby?
  • Under what circumstances should a woman avoid an epidural?
  • What happens during the recovery period?
  • What potential problems can arise?

“The Epidural Book – A Woman’s Guide to Anesthesia for Childbirth” is available for purchase on Amazon.com.  Readers are able to preview the book by clicking here.
