OCCC to Observe Relationship Violence Awareness Week

Studies show sad statistics regarding relationships and violence. Did you know that one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime? Student Support Services and the Office of Student Life on the Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) campus will host activities associated with Relationship Violence Awareness Week, Oct. 22-24.

Research has also shown that an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year; 85 percent of domestic violence victims are women; historically, females are most often victimized by someone they know; females, ages 20-24 years old are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence; and most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police.

October is designated as Domestic Violence Prevention Month to draw awareness to the facts and the signs of domestic abuse. Throughout the week at OCCC, information and activities have been planned to help put preventative measures in place regarding relationship violence.  Activities include:

 

  • Silent      Witnesses

The goal of Silent Witnesses is to remember the women, men and children who were murdered by domestic violence; to raise worldwide awareness of the extent of domestic violence; and to advocate and connect people with successful programs for ending the violence.

 

  • Healthy      Relationships Brown Bag Session

Presenter Patty Gail Patten has 25 years of experience in counseling and teaches workshops, seminars and in-service training throughout the state of Oklahoma dealing with subjects including co-dependency and relationship issues, personality disorders and addiction, family systems and addiction, boundaries, ethics and more.
