OrganoClick participates in a Vinnova project to phase out PFAS

The project Phasing out PFAS (POPFAS) aims at contributing to phasing out bioaccumulating and potentially hazardous per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) by developing competitive alternatives with reduced environmental footprint. Project partners are among others H&M HENNES & MAURITZ GBC AB, Billerud Korsnäs AB, SP Swerea, OrganoClick AB.

Today PFAS are present in significant amounts in surface water in many places all over Sweden. Recently, PFAS has been suggested to be the next environmental threat in the same magnitude as PCB or DDT. PFAS have been used for decades in a wide range of applications such as firefighting foams, textile impregnation, food packaging and cosmetics due to their versatile characteristics. Despite this, regulations are currently limited to perfluorooctane-based compounds, largely due to lack of competitive alternatives. One of the alternative in use is the still un-regulated shorter chain PFAS, whose health and environmental impact is still unknown.

-  OrganoClick® has done researched and developed PFAS-free alternatives for textiles for over 10 years. We are proud to contribute with our "know-how" in projects with many eminent partners, which all have the same goal as we; to achieve sustainable industrial development with reduced environmental impact, says Mårten Hellberg, CEO OrganoClick AB

In this project, a transdisciplinary consortium will perform a gap analysis of fluorine-free alternatives and gather information of their health and environmental impact to identify the most promising alternatives. Communication channels, such as websites or social media, will be established to educate manufacturers and consumers and aid them in making educated choices. A life cycle perspective will be taken in the project and water purification and waste streams will be considered. By pushing the development of alternative solutions, this project will facilitate the implementation of new policies and regulations. New technical solutions will contribute to decreased environmental impact, secure pure drinking water and competitive Swedish industrial partners. The project is funded by Vinnova and is executed from 1st of November 2016 to 31st of July 2017.
