Cornish Teacher Seeks Volunteers for Global Teaching Project

A teacher from Cornwall devotes summer to global teaching development

An outstanding teacher from Falmouth School is determined to do her bit for ending educational poverty by leading a team of 20 UK qualified teachers on a visit to Uganda this summer. Lizzie Waddling, an inspiring teacher of Expressive Arts and English will deliver teaching ideas and strategies to Ugandan teachers and schoolchildren, in order to improve their lives. She will lead a team of qualified teachers in delivering in-school coaching alongside a five day conference. Lizzie explained, “with the limited resources available to teachers in Africa, In-service teacher training is very rare and nearly always externally run rather than being integrated into school life. The result is didactic low-quality teaching.”

As such, Lizzie is seeking other ambitious leaders in teaching to join her venture. She said, “The skills needed to participate in such a programme are loads of enthusiasm, problem-solving skills and the ability to inspire: something we know will filter through to others involved.”

The UN’s 2015 Millennium Development Goals demand primary and secondary education for all; resulting in more children attending schools globally than ever before. Whilst this rise in education is indubitably going to benefit the future, it already stretches existing resources to breaking point. This coincides with the huge challenge of population growth.

As countries work to meet this unprecedented explosion in demand, more and more highly-skilled teachers are needed across the globe.

Lizzie is passionate about the power of teaching; using her thirst for travel to expand possibilities for children across the world. Through delivering engaging, challenging lessons, which develop thinking skills and problem-solving skills for all students, Lizzie is committed to developing the future of students in the Ugandan village. She said “these students will grow up to lead development within their own communities and nations: being better equipped to drive forward locally owned, sustainable development to change and improve lives.” By providing teachers with the knowledge and skills they need to deliver these high quality lessons the impact will disseminate to thousands of children.

Lizzie spent last summer working in India as an LRTT (Limited Resource Teacher Training) fellow and this year will lead her own team in Uganda.

“Uganda is a very special place to me, at Falmouth School we have strong links with schools in Uganda so I am delighted to be leading the teacher training project there this summer. And I love to return to work after the summer holiday and tell my students everything I have seen on my travels.” said Lizzie.

By training local teachers to develop a culture of sharing good practice, participants become ambassadors of LRTT and cascade knowledge to more teachers.
