Non-Profit Organization Announces Free, Online Video Series to Help Understand Children’s Sensory Issues
May 21, 2013 (CHICAGO) – Pathways.org, a national non-profit organization, announces the release of its latest video series, “Understanding Sensory Issues”, which helps to explain the effects and treatments for children who struggle with sensory issues. The videos are available to view for FREE at www.pathways.org, and are recommended for viewing by parents and health professionals. The series contains three videos that explain there are more than 5 senses, the different types of sensory stimuli, and how therapy helps children with sensory issues.
Sensory integration is the process by which individuals take in information from their senses and use it to make sense of the world. People with sensory issues might have difficulty processing information from their senses which can cause them to become over-reactive or under-reactive to sensory stimuli, or make everyday tasks such as the ability to organize or learn new motor skills difficult.
The videos use a variety of features to help explain sensory integration including: a short animation about our senses, commentary from an expert panel of health professionals, and stories about children who have sensory integration issues. Pathways.org hopes their FREE video series will lead to a better understanding of sensory issues and will help get children into treatment earlier.
“The ability to interpret and incorporate sensory information is a critical area of development in an individual’s life. This video series offers information on the importance of sensory integration and treatment options for those with sensory differences so that children, adolescents, and adults can live more fulfilling lives,” states Susanne Smith Roley, OTD, OTR/L, FAOTA.
The videos also describe occupational therapy and how it can be used as a treatment to help children better adapt to their sensory environment. Therapy can improve a child’s sensory processing and increase confidence, self-esteem, social participation, self-regulation, and overall skill development. Children participate in play-based activities like obstacle courses, trapeze swings, ball pits, and more.
Pathways.org offers more than 30 FREE videos online to help promote the early detection and intervention of children’s motor, sensory, and communication delays.
