TV star Carter Oosterhouse, brother Todd, choose Pella for sustainability

Veteran builders and designers Carter and Todd Oosterhouse chose ENERGY STAR®-certified Pella Impervia®fiberglass windows and Architect Series®doors featuring the natural beauty of wood for their new winery, north of their hometown of Traverse City, Mich.

One of America's most recognized home and lifestyle experts, Carter Oosterhouse is a proponent of sustainable building practices. Oosterhouse has starred in popular television series like those aired on Home and Garden Television (HGTV), including Rowhouse Showdown, Trading Spaces, Red and Hot & Green, Million Dollar Rooms, Celebrity Motor Homes and more.

Todd Oosterhouse built homes in Texas for 17 years, before returning home to Michigan to establish the winery with his brother, Carter. Todd is guiding the Bonobo Winery construction as the project’s general contractor.

“With their years of experience and reputation for excellence in design and construction, we’re honored that Carter and Todd Oosterhouse chose Pella Windows and Doors for their new winery,” said Stan Sturtz, director of marketing communications for Pella Windows and Doors.

The spectacular Bonobo Winery located on Michigan’s Old Mission Peninsula, includes 20 acres of wine grapes, a wine patio, and wood-burning fire pits to enjoy the great outdoors in the picturesque setting. The 86-acre facility will employ local residents and create an unmatched experience for visitors, to delight the senses, and embody the unique characteristics of the Traverse City area. Known for its vineyards, Traverse City is also hailed as the cherry capital of the world. The Bonobo vineyard, established in a former cherry grove, still borders acres of cherry trees.

The Old Mission Peninsula climate suits grape production well as it accents one of Lake Michigan’s most beautiful bays. That, plus the deep waters of the Grand Traverse Bay help create a microclimate especially well suited to growing grapes, used to make fine white wines. The Michigan winters often feature days on end of howling winds and deep snow drifts, contrasted by sparkling summer sunshine and hot, humid days. Those climate changes can make it a challenge to choose building products to withstand the temperature fluctuations and keep a structure comfortable year-round.

In choosing Pella Impervia windows for the project, the Oosterhouse brothers sought a highly-energy-efficient, highly-durable window to frame the stunning views of the peninsula where they grew up. Plus, they sought durable products tough enough to withstand Michigan’s weather extremes.

“Carter chose black Pella Impervia fiberglass windows with bars applied to the interior and exterior of each unit to create an industrial look, with modern energy efficiency and comfort,” said Pella Commercial Sales Representative Stephen Schlaudt, a 26-year employee with the Grand Rapids, Mich. Pella Window and Door team, who worked with the Oosterhouse brothers to choose the Pella products to accent the distinctive design planed in partnership with architects at the Traverse Architectural Group.

“Plus, the durability of the Pella Impervia fiberglass windows appealed to the Oosterhouse brothers because Impervia can withstand the demands of commercial use, and resist warping or sagging, even in a dark color like black,” Schlaudt said.

Energy-efficiency built into project’s design

While the spacious winery with more than 6,500 square feet (sq. ft.) on the upper level and more than 10,000 sq. ft. on the lower level looks like a large barn, the brothers don’t want it to feel as cold inside as a barn. That’s why they built energy-efficient features, like insulated concreted forms (ICFs), and two-by six construction into the design.

The ENERGY STAR-certified Pella windows will help keep winery guests warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, thanks to their energy-efficient fiberglass composite design and double-pane insulating glass. That means guests can remain comfortable year-round even when seated near the windows, because they’re less likely to transmit heat in the summer or cold in the winter like clear single-pane glass and other framing materials used in old industrial design can.

Known for their strong sense of craftsmanship, quality and style, the Oosterhouse brothers carefully selected features in the new winery to convey their own unique style.

Pella windows make design statement—inside and out

“I appreciate the quality of products assembled in America, like the Pella Impervia fiberglass windows made in Kentucky, the eight-foot tall Pella Architect Series doors made in Iowa, and the rich walnut Pella entry door crafted in Texas that add so much character,” Carter Oosterhouse said.

“Anyone can do windows,” he said.  “But what really sets our winery apart is the unique way these Pella windows add architectural interest by framing the view to make a design statement—inside and out.”

The brothers’ aim to make world-class wines, while implementing a business model inspired by the traditions, philosophies and ecological integrity of the region.

“We want guests to come in and stay awhile, enjoy fine Bonobo wines from our tasting room, and relax with their group in one of the many private spaces we’ve created, featuring wing back chairs, sofas and more,” said Carter Oosterhouse.
