Landfill monitoring system upgraded for Staffordshire County Council

20 July 2010 - Environmental Scientifics Group (ESG), the UK’s leading environmental compliance specialist is pleased to announce that it has recently upgraded its landfill monitoring systems for Staffordshire County Council by using fibre optic cabling. Automatic Landfill Monitoring Systems were installed in the 1990’s, to protect the properties adjacent to three of the Council’s landfill sites. The computer controlled analysis systems regularly check boreholes monitoring the properties – and given the time of their installation, use modems to transmit data and alarms to the client and ESG. ESG now has an internet friendly version for monitoring boreholes but as the nearest internet access point on the Staffordshire site was the CCTV system, 120 metres away – it required a linking mechanism. Therefore, trenches were dug between the system cabin and the CCTV controller and armoured fibre optic cable was laid (to protect it from being nibbled by the local wildlife). As a result of this upgrade, Staffordshire County Council and ESG now have wireless access to the data – a big improvement for both parties as it provides round the clock access without the need to be hooked up to an internet modem. Stuart Hunneyball, Operations Director at ESG says “this is the first time we have installed fibre optic cabling and it has been a real success. Not only has it made a big difference for this client, but it allows us to do the same for others. The use of wireless internet-based monitoring extends the range of services we can offer for site investigation and environmental monitoring by providing results on demand.” --ENDS-- Notes for Editors About Environmental Scientifics Group (ESG) Environmental Scientifics Group, or ESG as most people know it, is the UK’s leading company in environmental inspection, testing and consultancy.
