RALEIGH - The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) commends the North Carolina Legislature for passing Senate Bill 541, which takes a common sense approach to protecting public safety by requiring rideshare drivers to have adequate insurance coverage whenever they are working for a transportation network company such as Uber or Lyft.

“PCI testified in support of this bill because it protects not only drivers, but their passengers and the public by closing the insurance coverage gap that existed, said Oyango Snell, PCI’s regional manager. “This legislation which passed the legislature with overwhelming support requires rideshare drives have appropriate insurance from the time the drivers log on to the app until it’s turned off.”

The bill eliminates consumer confusion regarding insurance coverage and provides a framework for safe transportation options that support continued marketplace innovation. Across the country a total of 27 states have passed similar rideshare legislation.

“SB 541 addresses consumers concerns and helps bring clarity and consistency to rideshare insurance laws. It ensures the drivers, passengers, and the public are protected if an accident were to occur,” added Snell.

The bill will now head to Governor Pat McCrory.
