Step Out Walk To Stop Diabetes Kicks Off November Diabetes Awareness Month

ATLANTA (November 3, 2014) — The American Diabetes Association is kicking off Diabetes Awareness month by hosting its annual Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes event on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Turner Field.

Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes is a signature one-day fundraising and awareness walk benefiting the American Diabetes Association. Dollars raised through this fundraising event plays an important role in supporting the American Diabetes Association’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes while improving the lives of those affected by the disease.

Today, there are nearly 26 million Americans including one million Georgians who have diabetes. While an estimated 18.8 million have been diagnosed, there remains seven million people who are unaware that they have the disease.  If current trends continue, one in three American adults will have diabetes by the year 2050.

Tiffany Kirkland, Manager of Fundraising & Special Events with the Atlanta Chapter of the American Diabetes Association emphasizes that walking is one of the best forms of exercise for people living with diabetes. “Research shows that someone is diagnosed with diabetes every 17 seconds, says Kirkland. Step Out Walk provides an opportunity for those suffering with diabetes or may know someone who suffers with the disease to participate in a fun healthy activity.”

To register, volunteer or for more information about the Atlanta Step Out Walk To Stop Diabetes event, visit www.diabetes.org/stepoutatl or contact Tiffany Kirkland at 404-320-7100 ext. 3096.

In addition to Step Out Walk, the American Diabetes Association will hosts its Expo – 2014 event on Saturday, November 22 at Cobb County Galleria. This years expo will highlight information on diabetes care, management and prevention and is designed to bring awareness to the disease. The expo is a one day event and is free and open to the public. For more information about the American Diabetes Expo – 2014, visit www.diabetes.org/expo.
