DETROIT, Mich., October 2, 2012 –Rainbow PUSH Coalition and Citizenship Education Fund will convene the 13th Annual Global Automotive & Energy Summit October 3, 2012 at the MGM Grand Detroit Hotel.

This year’s theme, “Economic Parity: One Voice, One Goal,” will discuss leveling the playing field for minority firms who do business with automotive and energy companies.

“When the playing field is level and the rules are public, and the goals are clear everybody wins ",” said Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., president and founder of Rainbow PUSH Coalition. “Rainbow PUSH is proud to be in the forefront of championing the effort to ensure that minority suppliers are part of the automotive industry’s recovery. This enables them to spread their economic impact within their respective communities.”

The summit is intended to bring you the best of what the industry offers and to showcases the latest developments and highlights by us and our partners work:

Renewal of Polk and Rainbow PUSH Alliance

Polk, the leading automotive market intelligence firm, and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, led by Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sr., have signed a strategic business agreement to help automotive manufacturers better target their marketing efforts with ethnic audiences,

The agreement will allow the Rainbow PUSH Coalition to gain insight about vehicle buying habits among African American, Asian and Hispanic consumers. As part of this agreement, market shares and penetrations among the different ethnic groups will be provided for all automotive brands.

Rainbow PUSH’s messaging to minority consumers also will be enhanced with focused and market-driven information. In addition, Rainbow PUSH will leverage ethnic penetration data by brand to change its dialogue with minority auto dealers.

One Set of Rules- Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

Of the $144 billion spent annually on advertising within the nation, only one percent is used to target African American consumers despite the fact that African-American buying power, according to Nielsen’s State of the Black Consumer Report, is estimated at around $1 trillion – a figure larger than the GDP of most countries in the world. In 2011, automotive advertising was the leading category in dollar volume spending.

The Rainbow PUSH/CEF Marketing & Media Project focuses on corporate reciprocity of ethnic consumers, agency representation, and ethnic marketing and advertising spend in connection with consumer products. Following are some of the ways in which we are addressing the automotive industry:

  • Negotiating with the automotive industry and other industries on the engagement of African American advertising agencies, public relations firms and other professional services companies.
  • Establishing advertising spending measurements based upon the same concept/criteria as supplier diversity and human resource goals and initiatives.
  • Developing research and databases to quantify the economic relationship between marketers, advertising agencies, black radio stations, black newspapers, black magazines, black TV and cable companies and the African American consumer market.

Rainbow PUSH Diversity Scorecard (to be announced January, 2013)

  • Rainbow PUSH will evaluate automotive companies’ ongoing commitment to inclusion and make recommendations’ to enhance their diversity programs.
