It’s that time of year again – you can feel it in the air. And if you looked to the sky yesterday, you could also see it in the air! The annual American Home Shield (AHS) corporate and Memphis service center breast cancer donation campaign through the Susan G. Komen Foundation is underway.

The balloon launch, which was held on the grounds of the service center, represents a significant milestone for the overall campaign, as well as an important visual reminder of the difference associates are making in the local community.

Building on the wildly successful 2010 campaign which featured a friendly competition between service center and corporate associates, the two teams will again go toe-to-toe in a challenge to raise the most money in the fight against breast cancer.

Donations are being raised in various ways. Associates can donate money to wear jeans for a week or purchase a candy bar in support. Balloons for the event were $1 each and raised more than $1,750 (knocking last year’s $1,400 out of the park).

Last year’s overall campaign, which raised $20,000, focused primarily on Passionately Pink for the Cure. But this year AHS associates are lining up behind the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. They’re also looking to beat last year’s combined contributions.

“The visual impact alone brings such a positive feeling,” says Leif Dyer, customer relations manager. “There was a wonderful display of camaraderie among our associates as we made our way through the parking lot with our pink balloons. What is common among all of us during our balloon launch is our collective awareness of how serious this terrible disease is.”

Elaine Hare, The executive director for the Memphis Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, was on-hand yesterday to share a few words and join in the festivities.

“Being a part of the balloon launch moved me. Not just because it proves people care and that they hear our message, but because those 1,750 balloons represent 1,750 women,” said Elaine. “It is a symbol of hope and commitment to this cause and we are grateful to have American Home Shield and its associates as a driving force in our cause – saving women’s lives.”
