Applications to study at Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln are up more than 18% on last year, bucking a trend that has seen applications to universities across the UK fall by 8.7%

The college, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, enjoyed a rise of 18.1% in applications to its undergraduate degrees in the period leading up to the 15th January UCAS deadline.

The figures mean that BG enjoyed the second highest rise in applications of any publicly funded university or university college in England, behind Birkbeck College, University of London.

“We have seen a rise in applications because students and their parents like what they see when they come and visit,” said Deputy Principal Hâf Merrifield.

“We have an excellent academic reputation and a safe and attractive campus in a cathedral city, and we’re among the top ten UK universities for employability.

“And of course by charging £7,500 per year we’re determined to maintain a fair fee and keep our courses accessible to as many people as possible.”

The total number of applications received through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) from students wishing to study at Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln by the 15thJanuary 2012 deadline was 1,919. The comparable figure for 2011 was 1,625.
