Dog lovers are being asked to dig deep to help raise funds for a brand new dog rescue centre near Mansfield.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue received planning permission earlier this month to redevelop its existing rescue centre in Blidworth, Nottinghamshire.

Now it’s launching Stepping Stone to a New Home, a fundraising appeal which aims to raise £250,000 towards the cost of the new centre.

The furry face of the campaign is Jimmy, a Patterdale Terrier who was left tied up and in a neglected state outside the doors of the Blidworth centre earlier this month.

Jimmy is being nursed back to health and will soon be looking for a permanent new home – but until then he’s acting as the official mascot for the appeal, and he even appears in cartoon form on publicity material.

“Unfortunately, little Jimmy is typical of the many dogs we rescue every year,” said Catherine Foster, Head of Fundraising at Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

“Through no fault of his own he’s been neglected and abandoned, but our dedicated staff and volunteers are patiently looking after him and giving him a second chance.

“This work can only continue in Nottinghamshire if we raise enough money to redevelop our rescue centre, which is sorely in need of modernisation.”

The charity welcomes donations of all sizes, but one simple way of supporting the appeal is by buying a brick for just £10. Corporate donations and sponsorship packages are also available.

“By buying a brick or offering a corporate donation you can make a huge difference to the future of dogs in need across Nottinghamshire,” said Catherine.

Please send your donations to Jerry Green Dog Rescue, Warsop Lane, Blidworth, Nottinghamshire, NG21 0PG or donate online at www.justgiving.com/NottsBuildAppeal

Jerry Green Dog Rescue will be staging an open day at its Nottinghamshire centre in Blidworth on Sunday 28th July.

Jimmy’s Story

Jimmy, a Patterdale Terrier, was found tied up and alone outside jerry Green Dog Rescue’s Nottinghamshire rescue centre in Blidworth at the beginning of June.

He had been badly neglected, was suffering from an eye infection and had mange, a parasitic condition on his skin.

Despite his background Jimmy is a friendly, energetic and loveable dog. For the past few weeks he has been looked after by the staff at Jerry Green Dog Rescue in Blidworth, and after frequent visits to the vet he’s on the road to recovery. He is likely to be available for adoption soon.

Notes to Editors

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:

  • Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
  • Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
  • Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
  • Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
  • Thirsk, North Yorkshire

The existing Nottinghamshire centre can currently only cater for 10 dogs and the kennels and associated facilities are outdated and in a poor state of repair.

The new purpose-built facility will provide accommodation for 30 dogs as well as new offices, a training barn and an intake block to receive dogs when they are first brought into the centre.

Building work is expected to start in September and the project should be completed by the spring of 2014. The work will be carried out in phases and the centre will continue to operate as normal.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.

The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.

The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding.  This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
