News release: 16th October 2012

Durham student Rosie Kelly has landed on her feet with a prestigious PR internship.

Studying English and journalism at the University of Lincoln, she is also working at Lincoln-based Shooting Star PR one day a week throughout the academic year as part of the agency’s Rising Star internship programme.

The Rising Star scheme was created for students to develop talent and put skills into practice, giving them a leg-up in a competitive jobs market.

Interns who have participated in the scheme in the past have gone on to work in PR at GlaxoSmithKline, Brandnation and RBP International.

Rosie said: “It’s a great opportunity for me to broaden my horizons and experience another side to the media. In the past I’ve been reading press releases, now I’m the one writing them!

“I won’t be graduating into an easy labour market so it’s important to me to gain as much work experience as possible and make myself as employable as I can.”

Rosie is a second-year student has already gained work experience at local media outlets in both Lincolnshire and the North-East, including the BBC and national magazines.

Sam Pidoux, a learning adviser and part-time lecturer at the University of Lincoln, has worked closely with Rosie over the last year. “You can learn a lot in the classroom and you can learn the theory of what it's like to do something, but being able to experience it is very different” she said.

"Rosie has worked very hard over the past year and has grasped several work experience opportunities. With each placement she learns more about that job, but also more about herself and her abilities.

"Internships and work experience are really key in any student’s learning experience. It gives them the opportunity to learn and experience the world of work and to get an insight into their future careers.”

Kate Strawson, Director at Shooting Star PR, said, “We really enjoy working with university students as they bring so much enthusiasm and a different perspective.

“Everyone here is really looking forward to getting to know Rosie and helping her to develop her skill set further.”
