Astle BMW has handed the keys to a luxury vehicle over to a Lincolnshire athlete who is hoping to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

David Hughes (27), a talented 400-metre hurdler from Scunthorpe, has been given the 3 Series Coupe to use until December 2012.

BMW is an official partner to Team GB and the Paralympics GB Team on their journey to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Astle BMW is proud to be sponsoring David in the run up to next year’s games.

“I’m really into my cars,” said David. “I’ve never had a BMW before but the test drive was amazing. Astle gave me what was essentially a big shopping list of cars I could choose from! We tried out a few different models before I decided on the 3 series sport – I’m a big guy so I couldn’t fit in the likes of the Z4!”

Athletes hoping to qualify for the Olympic team take part in trials four weeks prior to the start of the games and the top three in each discipline are selected to compete.

This is the second time that David has attempted to qualify for the Olympics. In 2008 he finished fourth in the trials before the games, narrowly missing out on one of the top three spots.

David continued: “We’ll be training straight through now until about May time next year. I’m getting married in a couple of weeks too so it’s pretty full on!”

Mike Roberts, Project Manager at Astle BMW, said: “David is a talented athlete and we’re excited about sponsoring him throughout his training. We hope we can help support his successful bid to make it on to Team GB to compete in the Olympics.”
