R2 Certification Upgrades Implemented at all Sims Recycling Solutions U.S. Sites

New provisions included changes to security, safety and equipment tracking

Sims Recycling Solutions, a leading provider of global IT asset disposal (ITAD) services , recently upgraded their Responsible Recycling (R2) certification from R2:2008 to the latest R2:2013 standard. Sims currently maintains the R2 certificate in the United States, India and Australia. This certification, among others, helps demonstrate the consistency in services and standards across the globe.

Originally created by R2 Solutions, the R2 certificate offers general principles and practices for IT equipment disposal vendors. These vendors are defined as those who disassemble or reclaim used IT equipment including devices exported for refurbishment and recycling. This set of standards first introduced in 2008, recently presented an updated version which involves improvements to what is required for safety, data security, exportation and equipment tracking.

“As a global company in a developing industry we understand the significance of staying on top of the latest standards and security developments,” stated Sean Magann, vice president of Sims Recycling Solutions. “It is always encouraging to see a certifying organization working hard to increase the industry’s level of standards, ensuring all are up to date with the latest in safety, security and environmental responsibility.”

Included in this upgrade, tools and resources were made available to R2-certified facilities along with an implementation guide. Guidance was also provided for identification of acceptable downstream vendors, tracking of focus materials and avoidance and corrections of common non-conformances. Those who were evaluated and defined as “bad performers” were removed during this process which has been significant in upholding and strengthening the integrity of the R2 standard.

It is recommended to confirm your IT disposal vendor is offering services that will best protect you from data security and environmental threats. To view all industry certifications and standards held by Sims Recycling Solutions please visit the global website.
