E15 Ethanol Fuel Not Safe for Most Vehicles, Warns AAA

A new fuel called E15 that contains 15 percent ethanol may potentially damage the engines of many cars in the United States, warns the American Automobile Association (AAA).

The Obama administration approved the new fuel for use in cars made after 2001, but only about 5 percent of the 240 million cars and light trucks on the road are approved by their manufacturers to use it, reports UPI.

The driver’s group said that a survey of its members found little consumer awareness about the new fuel. AAA concludes that lack of awareness means that motorists may improperly fill up on E15 and damage their vehicles.

The group also warned that the drivers who did use E15 could invalidate their warranties.

AAA is urging the Environmental Protection Agency to temporarily withdraw its approval of the fuel.
