The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Wegmans Food Markets Inc. has recalled 31,000 lbs. of Wegmans Organic Spinach and Spring Mix due to a possible E. coli contamination.

The recalled products were sold in clam shell packages of 5 oz. (UPC 77890 16437) and 11 oz. (UPC 77890 16411).

The products were sold in the produce department of Wegmans stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts between October 14 and November 1.

The FDA has received 16 reports of illnesses from E. coli O157 H:7 in New York. The infection may cause a diarrheal illness, frequently accompanied with bloody stools. The symptoms emerge between three to nine days after exposure.

In some cases, patients may develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which can be fatal.  The aged and young children are more likely to develop HUS.

The FDA has asked consumers to discard the products from their home and contact the company for a full refund.
