Fashion students launch 8th issue of Third Floor

Third Floor was created eight years ago as a live project for final year students; one of the first live projects that was run for the fashion courses.

Funded by Southampton Solent University, Third Floor successfully launched their eighth publication of the magazine in May 2015. Targeting creative professionals, the magazine aims to provide a collective editorial of portfolios submitted by students from across all the fashion courses. Students working on the magazine gain real world experience sourcing models, clothing and contributors. Liaising directly with industry professionals and working with a team to a tight deadline, the students have the opportunity to develop confidence in their skills and expertise.

Amber Dolley, sub-editor of the magazine, graduated from BA (Hons) Fashion Photography with a first class honours degree. Her ultimate career goal is to become a freelance fashion photographer, and she told us how working at Solent on the magazine team as a graduate gave her new experiences for working in a professional environment.

Amy De Friend has been aiming towards becoming a creative director or fashion photographer for a major fashion brand. She explained how it would be difficult to pin point the proudest moment of the production team as a whole. “It’s difficult to pick one thing as I am really proud of the whole publication, everyone’s hard work over the past few months has really paid off.”

Catherine Brown, studying fashion photography, worked on the photography and feature edits in the magazine. Although she did not spend a complete three years at Solent, Catherine still took full advantage of the experiences we have to offer. She says that it has been very beneficial for her to have gained experience working on Third Floor.

Stylist and feature editor Rosalyn Stanley most enjoyed sourcing the clothing and interacting with designers and industry professionals. Reflecting on the final publication, the aspect of the production of which she is most proud was seeing the finished product. “The biggest challenge was getting all the content together as there was only a small team of us, we all had to work hard."

Graduate Nadine Mahon also studied fashion photography and her main roles when working on the magazine were: project manager, photographer, features editor and social media manager.

All fashion students working on the magazine gain essential skills and a taste of what it’s really like to work in the competitive creative and fashion industries.

Lisa Mann, Programme Group Leader for Fashion Management, highlighted the success of the latest publication: “This issue has a very clean and minimal finish, which is what we wanted this year, something fresh. We are pleased with the result and very proud of what our students achieve. I am particularly pleased with the graphic design and the new size and shape of the publication.”

Third Floor issue 8 is available to purchase for £5.00 from Re:So Southampton or Somerset House in London. More information on the issue can be found on the Third Floor blog or you can follow updates on Twitter.
