Fast food gets healthy makeover at University

Southampton Solent is the first UK University to encourage eco-innovation in the form of a healthy vending concept on campus.

The University’s catering provider Sodexo has championed the arrival of the Honest Café, a diet-savvy vending space in the East Park Terrace campus.

Honest Café is all about locally-sourced low calorie organic options. Soft drinks high in sugar and snacks high in fat have been struck from the menu and replaced with locally-sourced low calorie organic options.

Alongside a wide selection of juices, fruit teas, flavoured popcorn and baked vegetable snacks, the Honest Café also provides Fairtrade tea, latte, cappuccino and hot chocolate - all made using fat free 100% skimmed milk.

Bryan Carroll, Deputy Director of Estates at Facilities at Southampton Solent says: “It’s great to see the ‘Honest Café’ installed. The University and Sodexo have been champions of promoting innovative, ethical and healthy food choices on campus for a number of years. The vending option will never be quite the same again.”

Contracted by Sodexo to provide vending options across the campus, Revive Vending, based in nearby Salisbury, also donates a percentage of its proceeds to Edukaid, a charity that improves the lives of children in rural Tanzania through education.

The installation of this new feature comes just weeks after Sodexo’s on-campus catering facilities were awarded a prestigious Silver Status catering mark as part of the Soil Association’s commitment to venues who recognise ethically-sourced produce free from controversial additives.

Nick Hayter, Sodexo’s group account manager for Southampton Solent University, said: “We have a commitment to the University, to continue our growth in promoting a healthy lifestyle, and with this in mind, it’s fantastic to be able to offer a vending solution that matches our business direction.”
