Science Futures for Father's Day
Southampton Solent has joined up with universities from across the region to produce a fascinating and fun-filled family day at Winchester Science Centre this Father’s Day.
In addition to the centre’s usual programme of more than 100 hands-on science exhibits and the UK's largest-capacity digital planetarium, visitors on Sunday June 15 will find a range of extra activities and expert talks on university research at the Science Futures exhibition.
Part of Universities Week, Science Futures is a collaboration between local universities that aims to lift the lid on the research being carried out in higher education.
Academics and researchers from Southampton Solent University will be giving expert talks and providing interactive activities on a range of topics, including: Seeing for success – how the world’s top athletes use their eyes in sport; How loud is too loud? – using official guidance and ear simulation technology to highlight the dangers of machinery and music amplification; and Illusions: Probing the Mind – how scientists use visual images to illustrate how the brain creates our representation of the world.
Dr Anthony Gallagher, Southampton Solent University’s marine sustainability expert and an organiser of Science Futures, says: “It's an excellent opportunity for the public to engage with some of the fantastic applied research that is going on within their local universities, and to give some insight into how these projects might affect their lives in the future.”
The Science Futures exhibition also features talks and activities from the University of Southampton, Bournemouth University, the University of Portsmouth, the University of Reading, the Solent Forum and South East Physics Network (SEPnet). Research topics from other universities will include prosthetics, advances in cancer research, and polymers.
The Winchester Science Centre will be open on Sunday 15 June from 10am-5pm. Cost of admission to the centre is £9 for adults, £6.50 for children aged 3-16 years and £7.50 for concessions.
