Stunning Sky poster designs ensured that two Southampton Solent University students were awarded a prestigious industry accolade at this year’s annual D&AD New Blood exhibition, attended by the very best in creative talent from across the UK.

Based on a real Sky brief, BA (Hons) Advertising students Anders Kristoffersen and Michael McCallum’s 'Movie Mash-ups' posters were given a D&AD book award for summarising a film plot which could apply to several movies from a wide range of genres. For example ‘A father vows to get his children back no matter the cost’ – which equally describes Liam Neeson action movie Taken, animated classic Finding Nemo and Robin Williams comedy Mrs Doubtfire.

Originally from Lofoten in Norway, Anders studied advertising and brand communication at the Norwegian School of Creative Studies followed by a top-up year at Solent.

He said: “It’s great to have your work recognised. It gives you an indication that you are doing something right. Something the industry and the public can appreciate. It’s especially nice to receive good feedback when you’ve worked really hard on something.”

After graduation, Anders is moving to Stockholm to do an interactive art director program before looking for work with a creative content agency.
Michael McCallum from Jersey said: “My inspiration was simply my love of film and it is an honour to have some of our early work recognised. Hopefully it will catch the eye of some agencies.”

He is keen to enjoy a few internships before finding a position as a creative or art director in an advertising agency.

“During my time at Solent, visits to different agencies opened my eyes to the real world of advertising and made me understand how my creativity could be put to good effect," he added.

Final-year graphic design, illustration and advertising students are given the opportunity to attend the D&AD New Blood exhibition, which celebrates the finest in design and advertising - each year. A D&AD award is recognised globally as the ultimate creative accolade.

Peter Lloyd, Head of School of Art & Design said: “This exhibition and the awards are the Oscar’s of the creative industry. The Solent stand and our students’ work made a great impression on attending industry. It showcased the dynamic, creative and innovative talent that Solent and produced a lot of work placement and other career opportunities for those exhibiting.”
