Southampton Solent University has joined the stampede to support Marwell’s Zany Zebras, a public art extravaganza coming to Southampton in 2016.

The project, which for the ‘mane’ event will see Marwell’s Zany Zebras gallop through the streets of Southampton for ten weeks during summer 2016, will create a fun, family friendly trail for all to enjoy.

Marwell Wildlife is again bringing art to the streets and parks of Southampton, following the success of its Go! Rhinos project in 2013. The herd of sculptures will showcase artistic talent in the local area, highlight the plight of zebras in the wild and encourage visitors to experience Southampton. There will also be a trail of replica miniature Marwell Zany Zebras hidden throughout Marwell Zoo itself.

The University plans to run an online competition to name its zebra, with a further competition later in the year for art and design students to win the chance to decorate it.

Director, Marketing and Communications Service, Tere Daly, says: “Southampton Solent University is delighted to support Marwell’s Zany Zebras. Our students will compete for the chance to decorate our sculpture and we look forward to seeing students, staff, local residents and visitors to Southampton as they explore the trail.”

At the end of the ‘mane’ event, the large sculptures will be sold at auction to raise funds to conserve endangered Grevy’s zebras and support communities living in the arid rangelands of northern Kenya.

Kirstie Mathieson, Project Manager for Marwell’s Zany Zebras said: “It’s great to have Southampton Solent University on board with Marwell’s Zany Zebras. Involvement in this project provides a great way for their creative arts students to shine – a fantastic opportunity for those wishing to forge a career in the creative industries.”

About Marwell’s Zany Zebras

In 2013, Marwell Wildlife brought the hugely successful Go! Rhinos public art trail to the city, which was enjoyed by more than 250,000 visitors and residents. Following its huge success, Marwell Wildlife has been inspired to do it all again with Grevy’s zebras, chosen to highlight the plight of the species in the wild. Marwell Wildlife has been working with partners in northern Kenya for two decades to conserve wildlife in the area, where under 3,000 Grevy’s zebra remain in the wild, and support people who depend on the environment. Marwell’s Zany Zebras will hit the streets of Southampton in 2016. For more information visit http://zanyzebras.org.uk/.
