Student musicians record at Abbey Road Studios

Music students at Southampton Solent University have had a once-in–a-lifetime opportunity to record a track in the world-famous Abbey Road Studios in London.

Abbey Road Studios, made famous by its namesake – the Beatles’ Abbey Road album - has an unparalleled history of recording, and is still the facility of choice for many of the world's most celebrated artists, producers, composers and orchestras. It remains one of the most technically advanced recording and mixing facilities in the world; with wonderful acoustic spaces, and a unique blend of vintage equipment and today's leading technology.

Students studying BA (Hons) Popular Music Performance and BA (Hons) Popular Music Production are given the chance to visit and record at Abbey Road Studios as part of their degree course. Musicians compete in front of a panel of judges for a chance to work in Studio 3 for a full day supported by top in-house Abbey Road engineers.

Yasmin Corrigan, BA (Hons) Popular Music Performance student and lead singer of the band that recorded commented, “The whole recording experience was unforgettable; I recorded with the very microphone that Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and John Lennon had sung into, which felt amazingly surreal!

Yasmin continues, “It’s fantastic that Solent University provides opportunities like this alongside our studies, to use in my portfolio to help further my music career.”

Six BA (Hons) Music Production students accompanied the musicians to learn about the recording and mixing facilities, and watch the Abbey Road engineers in action. They have exclusive access to the recorded audio ‘stems’, to mix them in their own individual style.

Dr Pete Wilson, Course Leader, BA (Hons) Popular Music Performance added, “Recording at Abbey Road is a dream for most musicians. We are proud to offer our music students at Solent University this opportunity, it’s these real-world learning experiences that help expand our students’ portfolios and give them a taste of the industry.”

If you are interested in a career in the music industry, it’s not too late to apply for one of Southampton Solent University’s specialist music and performance degree courses. Visit www.solent.ac.uk/courses to find out more.
