University unveils new China strategy

Southampton Solent University’s new internationalisation strategy has taken another step forward this month following a recent visit to China.

Following the success of last year’s high-level visit from the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Chinese National Academy of Education Administration, Solent University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Graham Baldwin and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement) Professor Mike Wilkinson were invited to make a return visit this March.

“We are developing a new strategy in China which is aimed at a two-way exchange of students and staff,” says Professor Wilkinson.

“This will be built upon strategic partnerships with Chinese institutions and this visit has already set us well on the way to achieving our initial goals, including recruitment of Chinese students to the UK from September 2015 and short-term visits to China by European students,” he added.

In just over a week, the delegation from Solent visited eight universities, four of which had visited Southampton at the end of last year.

The visit and preparatory work have resulted in signed Memoranda of Understanding and International Exchange Agreements covering most curriculum areas with the following institutions:

•        Hubei University of Economics, Wuhan

•        Huaiyin Institute of Technology, Huai’an, Jiangsu Province

•        Hunan University of Science and Engineering, Yongzhou

•        Sichuan International Studies University, Chongqing

•        Shanghai Jianqiao University

•        Shangluo University, Shaanxi Province

•        Three Gorges University, Yichang, Hubei Province

•        Weinan Normal University, Shaanxi Province.

“The Chinese delegation’s recent trip to Southampton - which included a visit to the council chamber and a meeting with the Mayor - and the amount of time our staff spent with them, contributed enormously to the ease and success of our return visit,” says Vice-Chancellor Professor Baldwin.

“Several of our Chinese colleagues remarked on the warmth of their welcome to both the City and the University and they greeted us as ‘old friends’ according to the Chinese custom.”
