Stag Bakeries announces completion of £525,000 investment programme

Stag Bakeries, the Stornoway-based family-owned bakery, has announced completion of a £275,000 expansion. Alongside the expansion, Stag has invested in new machinery to enable further new product development. The total investment is estimated at £525,000.

The bakery has been expanded by an additional 350 square metres which has allowed for additional warehouse and office space for the growing business. The new building was constructed by local contractors Neil Mackay & Co Ltd.

Charlie Macdonald, owner of Stag Bakeries said “For many years we have had a very healthy trade in the Scottish islands providing a range of freshly baked goods. Three years ago we took the decision to invest in the Stag brand so that it had a broader appeal both in the UK and overseas. Stag has experienced exceptional sales growth in recent years, especially in the ambient biscuit range. In order for us to maintain efficiencies and plan for future growth and sales opportunities we identified that we needed to create additional space at the bakery.

“We operate in a very competitive market, so it is vital that we remain innovative and work hard on developing the bakery to remain ahead of the game. The new machinery will enable us to extend our product offer and further extend our award-winning range.”

“We have to make special mention to the Highlands & Islands Enterprise, as without their assistance this project would not have come to fruition.”

Stag’s baking heritage on the beautifully unspoilt Outer Hebridean island of Lewis stretches back to 1885 and although the bakery is now modern, many things have not changed since those early days.

Skilled people, attention to detail, traditional recipes and time honoured methods are still at the heart of this artisan bakery and it shows in the products

The product range includes sweet and savoury biscuits.
