Teachers' conference helps embed changes in computing curriculum
Staffordshire University is helping schoolteachers from across the country get to grips with algorithms, Raspberry Pi and the evolving curriculum of Computer Science at a conference being held this week.
The Schools of Computing and Education have teamed up to host the free event taking place at the University’s Beaconside site in Stafford on Friday 26 June.
Following changes to the National Curriculum, A levels and GCSEs in Computer Science, the conference will reflect on the successes and challenges faced by teachers over the past year.
“The focus is now on teaching youngsters how to code and to understand how computers actually work, rather than just teaching them how to use computers.” said Jonathan Westlake, Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing.
“I believe it is a positive thing to promote that mindset and to encourage the next generation to have a go at experimenting and inventing new things, rather than just be consumers.”
Following the success of the 2014 conference, the Computer Science in Schools Conference will deliver interactive workshops, panel discussions and the opportunity for educators to network and discuss ideas.
A keynote presentation titled “The Landscape for Computing and ICT” will be delivered by Mark Dorling, National CPD Coordinator for Computing at School.
“As a University it is our role to provide a beacon for schools and teachers to look to. There’s a lot of information out there for teachers but sometimes it’s hard to know where to start.” Jonathan added.
“Whether you’re new to computer science teaching or an experienced computing teacher, looking for ideas and support for this new curriculum, this conference has something for you.”
The conference is being held at the University’s Beaconside site in Stafford on Friday June 26, from 9.00 - 4.30.
